The 11th Annual Big White Community Clean Up

This past weekend my family and I took part in the 11th Annual Big White Community Clean Up. This event is one of the things I love about the Big White community. It comes as no surprise that after we welcome thousands of visitors through the winter months some trash collects under the many feet of snow, which this year, continue to accumulate right up to a few weeks before the event. So every year once the snow melts Big White full-time residents and locals from Kelowna and area come together to all that’s been left behind.

Owen was old enough to help pick up garbage this year and couldn't have been more excited... well... for the first 30 minutes or so. Addison stayed in the stroller most of the time but was happy to be out in the fresh mountain air. I believe taking part in activities like this from a young age will have a positive impact on the my children’s character but in the present it was a wonderful, fun, family activity.

We woke up and got the coffee going and the griddle warming so we could start nourish our bodies with pancakes and fresh fruit before the big morning. Then we put on all our rain gear since rain seems to always be in the forecast for Big White in June. Ironically, I didn’t more than dribble for a minute all morning. All geared up and with garbage picker-uppers in hand, we walked up to the Village where a large crowd was getting together. We signed in so we could get our commemorative t-shirt and BBQ coupon.

Michael J, SVP of Marketing for Big White Ski Resort thanked everybody who came out on behalf of the resort before Firefighter Dom stepped up to provide instructions for all the volunteers that had come out. Then we were off to do what we had come to do. My family and I started out on a walk down Big White Road, then down around Stonegate Resort towards White Forest Estates. We picked up a lot of beverage cans and plastic bags. We finished further down on Big White Road, pulling garbage out of the roadside ditch. We had collected enough of fill a bag and left it on the roadside for the dedicated crew to collect before making our way back to the Village, ready for the BBQ.
